On Saturday, June 12th 2010 in the Marszałek Rydz-Śmigły Park on Rozbrat Street in Warsaw took place the 14th Science Picnic, organized by the Polish Radio and the Copernicus Science Centre. It is Europe’s largest outdoor science-popularization event. Its first edition was organized in 1997. In this year’s Picnic took part 215 institutions from 21 countries.

In the tent no. 71 was located the stand of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews. Four computer stands enabled to present to the visitors the goals and mission of the Museum, its building and galleries, and its main Internet projects: the Virtual Shtetl portal, devoted to the local history of Polish cities and towns, where Jewish communities lived before the war, and the program “Polish Righteous – Recalling Forgotten Memory”, presenting the stories of Righteous Among the Nations and of the Jews they rescued during the Second World War. Both projects were warmly received and met with interest. The sense and role of the program “Polish Righteous – Recalling Forgotten Memory” is perfectly illustrated by the moment, when on the portal devoted to the Righteous, grandchildren found the story of their grandfather, Julian Szklarski. Apart from that, visitors were able to play with dreidels, participate in artistic workshops and play Yiddish puns. All visitors of the Museum’s tent also had the possibility to join the campaign “Obywatele Kultury” (“Citizens for Culture”) and sign a petition calling for an increase in government spending for culture. All guest received a parting gift: a special stamp with famous yiddishisms.

At the 14th Science Picnic many culture institutions, colleges, embassies, institutes and scientific research facilities had their tents. Every year about 250 institutions from Poland and from abroad take part in this outdoor event. Strolling along the Machine Avenue, Atomic Street and Museum Avenue, visiting the Biological-Medical Pavilion and the Archeological Village, visitors were able to learn both about humanities and formal, natural or social sciences. The main goal of the Picnic is to disseminate knowledge of various disciplines through presenting interesting experiments and games.

More information and films presenting this event can be found on the website of the 14th Science Picnic.
