The School Complex TAK from Opole has been named after Irena Sendler

The director of the School Complex TAK is Beata Maliszkiewicz, who in 2009 received the Irena Sendler Award “For Repairing the World”. This award was created on the initiative of the Association of “Children of the Holocaust” in Poland and the American “Life in a Jar” Foundation. The distinction, awarded to Beata Maliszkiewicz by the Chapter of the Competition, was presented to her on June 30th, 2009 in Warsaw by Krzysztof Stanowski, the Under-Secretary of State in the Ministry of National Education. In the ceremony took part representatives of the “Life in a Jar” Foundation, the Association of “Children of the Holocaust” in Poland and the Foundation Center for Citizenship Education

The students, parents and teachers unanimously decided, that the patron of their school should be Irena Sendler, famous for her heroism, activist of the underground Council to Aid Jews “Żegota”, who saved 2,500 children during the Second World War. They want the Righteous Among the Nations to become a model for the future generations and to inspire by her courage and altruism the students of their school.

The School Complex of the Society of Alternative Education, consisting of an elementary and secondary school, is the oldest nonpublic school in the Opole province. It was founded by parents and teachers, who wanted to create an alternative to the existing model of teaching and educating children. In the school year 2009/2010 the School Complex TAK carries out the project “Children of the World”, devoted to the living conditions of the children and young people from various countries and regions, and to the possibilities of helping those children who need it. The main goal of the project is to teach awareness and taking responsibility for other people.

This year, the awarding of the Irena Sendler Award “For Repairing the World” will take place on June 21st, 2010 at noon in the palace of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at 6 Foksal Street in Warsaw.
