Debate: ”The Catholic Church and the Shoah”
On behalf of the editorial board of the annual Holocaust Studies and Materials and The Polish Center for Holocaust Research IFiS PAN we would like to invite you to take part in the debate entitled “The Catholic Church and the Shoah”, which will revolve around the topics from the fifth number of the review Holocaust Studies and Materials. The panel guestes: Szymon Rudnicki, Tomasz Dostatni OP and Stanisław Krajewski.
The debate is organized in two sequences:
- Firstly, what did the Church do in the face of the Shoah there and then; what was its answer to what was going on with the Jews during the occupation; what were its actions and its omissions. What do we know and what should we still learn about this page of the history of the Church during the occupation time. What knowledge penetrates into the common consciousness.
- Secondly, how is the Church in Poland coping with the heritage of the Shoah nowadays; can we talk about a specific “catholic memory” of the Shoah; is there anything we could call “the catholic Haggada” of the Holocaust. Is the Shoah, which took place before the eyes of the polish catholic majority, an important point of reference in the pastoral practice and the theological reflection.
The questions of both sections mark out two time horizons: the past and the present. Both of them are connected by the figure of Pius XII: the controversy over the estimation of the pope which we are facing today cannot be solved without a thorough recognition and description of his attitude and behaviours during the war.
After the panelist’s voices we invite the public to take part in the discustion.
The debate will take place on 22nd April at 6:30 pm in Klub Księgarza on Rynek Starego Miasta (Old Market Square) 22/24 in Warsaw
