Irena Sendler Granted Honorary Citizenship of the City of Otwock
On March 15th, 2010, at 5 pm, the Auditorium of the Youth Culture Center in Otwock was the locale of a ceremonious session of the City Council of Otwock, during which the title of an Honorary Citizen of Otwock was posthumously awarded to Irena Sendler. Otwock authorities adopted the resolution to honor Irena Sendler as a result of an initiative of the townspeople.
Janina Zgrzembska, Sendler’s daughter, received the honorary citizenship certificate from the Chairman of the City Council. She was also presented with the symbolic key to the city by the Mayor.
The Council unanimously adopted the resolution for the 2nd Junior High School in Otwock to bear the name of Irena Sendler.
Among the guests present at the ceremony were Anna Mieszkowska, the author of Sendler’s biography, Zbigniew Nosowski, the chairman of the Social Committee to Commemorate the Jews from Otwock and Karczew (Społeczny Komitet Pamięci Żydów Otwockich i Karczewskich), and the Righteous from Otwock: Maria Lebiedzińska, Danuta Korzanecka, and the son of the late Bronisław Marchlewicz.
