“The legacy of Jan Karski: the man who tried to stop the Holocaust”

Between November 1st and November 9th, 2010 in Toronto, Canada will be held the 30th Annual Holocaust Education Week presented by the Sarah and Chaim Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre.

As part of this event, the opening of the exhibition “The legacy of Jan Karski: the man who tried to stop the Holocaust” will take place on November 7th at 7:30 pm. The exhibition will be on display between November 7th and November 9th, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

The exhibition features multimedia presentations honoring the legendary emissary who informed the West about the Holocaust.

Ewa Wierzyńska, initiator and manager of the Jan Karski – Unfinished Mission project developed under the auspices of the Association of the Jewish Historical Institute in Poland, will include a biographical information about Karski and a description of initiatives devoted to his memory developed by various grassroots organizations in Poland.

During the Second World War Jan Karski was the emissary of the Polish Underground State. He transmitted information about the Holocaust to the Allies.

He managed to get into the Warsaw Ghetto twice. He also reached the transit camp in Izbica. He was an eyewitness of the extermination of the Jews.

In 1982 Jan Karski was honored with the title of the Righteous Among the Nations and in 2000 he was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of the City of Łódź. He died on July 13th, 2000 in Washington.
