More People to be Honoured in Warsaw's Garden of the Righteous

In 2015, the title of "Righteous" was bestowed on Petro Hryhorenko (1907-1987), a Soviet Army general who, throughout his career stood up for those who were being persecuted, among them the dispossessed Tartars”, Nelson Mandelai (1918-2013), "an opponent of apartheid, free of hatred or revenge, who led the RSA from civil war to peace” and Hasan Mazhar, "Governor of Ankara who, despite the crimes of the authorities and social pressure, refused to take part in the Turkish genocide of the Armenians (1915-1917)” (from the Committee of the Garden of the Righteous).
Those honoured previously as Righteous include Marek Edelman, Magdalena Grodzka-Gużkowska, Jan Karski, Antonia Locatelli, Tadeusz Mazowiecki and Anna Politkowska.
Every year, the History Meeting House announces three stories of the Righteous. Nominations can come from anyone. The choice is made on a vote by the Garden of the Righteous Committee, the members of which include outstanding representatives of the diplomatic corps, culture and public administration.
