The second of a series of debates devoted to the Righteous Among the Nations, organized as part of the project “Polish Righteous – Recalling Forgotten History” by the Museum of the History of Polish Jews, took place on December 7th, 2010 at the Kultura Cinema in Warsaw.
In the debate “Rescuing of Jews. Film and history” participated the director of the film Feliks Falk, Tadeusz Sobolewski (film critic, “Gazeta Wyborcza”) and Dr. Bartosz Kwieciński (Centre for Holocaust Studies, Jagiellonian University). It will be moderated by Dr. Małgorzata Pakier from the Educational Center Museum of the History of Polish Jews.
The main subject of the discussion was the problem of presenting historical events from the time of the Second World War in films and of their fictional processing.
The film’s plot is located in Kraków during the Second World War. Joanna (played by Urszula Grabowska) meets a little Jewish girl (Sara Knothe) in the church. She decides to help her.
This is when the dramatic story of hiding begins. Joanna is soon denounced. During the search, a Nazi officer discovers her secret. He is willing to keep it under one condition. The heroine is forced to collaborate with the invader…
