The first actions for the benefit of Poles who helped Jews during the occupation were taken by Jewish organizations established by the few who survived the Holocaust. This happened just after the World War II - before Yad Vashem Institute was set up in Jerusalem.
After Yad Vashem created medals for ‘Righteous Among the Nations’, in 1963-1968, this topic was taken up by the Embassy of Israel in Warsaw.
In 1979, the Jewish Historical Museum – as the only institution in Poland – took care of the documents and helped with submitting applications for awarding of medals.
It still continues its work and it is supported by the Embassy of Israel, as well as by the highest authorities of Poland.
