(A)pollonia, that is Warlikowski about sacrifice

Since today, May 16th, 2009, in the former Vodka Manufacture “Koneser” in Warsaw Praga , Krzysztof Warlikowski shows (A)pollonia, a performance inspired by i.a. Hanna Krall’s documentary from the volume “There is no River there any more”.

Apolonia Machczyńska, a mother of three children, during the occupation hiding 20 Jews, died shot by the Germans. Before the execution, her father could choose: he will rescue his daughter if he pleads guilty. Apolonia dies. .

"We remind Pola’s story so that everybody could ask themselves what they would have done if they hade been then in Kock”, Hanna Krall says in the interview for Gazeta Wyborcza. Krzysztof Warlikowski: “These are not only stories of saint women, but also those who kill them.“

By joining the ancient dramas by Euripides and Aischilos together with Hanna Krall’s documentary, the director asks questions about the borders of sacrifice and about moral choices that life forces us to make.
