Righteous awarded in the Synagogue

On March 19th 2009 descendants of six heroes were given Righteous Among Nations medals and honorary certificates in the Warsaw Nożyk Synagogue.

 

The medals were awarded posthumously to: Wanda Dewitz, a German language teacher who gave shelter to many Jews in her house in Anin, Aniela and Gerwazy Kotlewski who saved a 2 year-old girl brought out from the Warsaw Ghetto, Amelia and Henryk Szpakowski and their son Henryk. The Jewish family of three named Winograd lived in the Szpakowskis’ house in Pruszków.
 

Two of the Saved were present at the ceremony - Anna Groszkiewicz (saved by the Kotlewskis) and Barbara Mondiano (her parents and brother were hiding at the Szpakowskis’) along with their families. The Saved told the heroic stories of the Righteous in a beautiful and touching way.
 

The ceremony, in which 200 invited guests took part, was accompanied by the Israeli choir Dadarei Ron from Rehovot conducted by Avi Feintoch.
