A veteran’s call to honor Polish nuns
In his letter to Yad Vashem Institute in Jerusalem, Paweł Z. Woś, a veteran now living in U.S., reminded about the Polish nuns who hid Jewish children in orphanages and monasteries.
”About 2000 Jewish children were saved that way. At least 1000 women took part in this humane venture. Only 20 of them were officially honored” – Paweł Woś wrote in the letter.
Awarding the title of the Righteous Among the Nations by the Institute requires, as the letter’s author mentions, saved Jews to certify that a given person indeed helped them.
He suggests, however, that in this case merits of all the nouns should be appreciated as “proceeding according to the usual standards, with the saved Jewish children’s certifications, is obviously impossible”.
He also proposes erecting a monument in remembrance of the Polish nuns in the area of Yad Vashem Institute.
