Poles Saving Jews Exhibition Open in the Polish Parliament
An exhibition, "Poles Saving Jews During World War II", prepared by the Rzeszów branch of the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), opened in the Polish parliament (the Sejm) on 23rd February 2016. The exhibition is part of a research project ("The Extermination of Jews on Polish Territory") under the patronage of the Sejm Speaker, Marek Kuchciński. Others to take part in the Official Opening included the Sejm Deputy Speaker Ryszard Terlecki, the President of the Institute of National Remembrance Łukasz Kamiński, parliamentarians, members of the diplomatic corps and local government representatives.
The exhibition presents the stories of Poles who extended help to Jews during the Holocaust. Twenty seven panels describe more than a dozen stories of individuals and organisations who provided aid. They pay particular attention to the circumstances surrounded these actions - the repressions on occupied Polish territory. Selected stories, including those of Jan Karski and Mieczysław Fogg, have been augmented with archival photographs and documents. Other panels tell the stories of the clergy and of Poles who were murdered for helping Jews.
"Thousands of our countrymen helped their neighbours, Jewish citizend of the Second Polish Republic", said Speaker Marek Kuchciński during the opening. "Today, recalling those horrible crimes perpetrated by the Germans seventy five years ago, we have an obligation to return to those events, recalling them truthfully."
The organisers stressed that the presentation of the IPN's new exhibition takes places just prior to the opening of the Ulm Family Museum of Poles Saving Jews During the Holocaust in Markowa. That Museum will open next month.
"The issues which we touch on with this exhibition are not just one of the most important research and educational tasks of the IPN, but they are also truly a fundamental element of our common identity. They are one of the most important topics which touch, not only our past, but also our present and future", said Łukasz Kamiński, President of the IPN.
The exhibition was prepared by the Public Education Bureau of the Istitute of National Remembrance (IPN) - the Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes Against the Polish Nation as part of the "Extermination of Jews on Polish Territory" research project. Its was created by Dr hab. Elżbieta Rączy of the IPN's Rzeszów branch, together with factual consultant Dr Aleksandra Namysło. Patron of the exhibition is Sejm Speaker Marek Kuchciński.
