Gariwo commemorates Jan Karski
The ceremony was organized by Gariwo – Gardens of the Righteous Worldwide. Among its participants was Ewa Wierzyńska, coordinator of the project „Jan Karski – Unfinished Mission” of the Polish History Museum. She has presented the figure of Jan Karski, legendary courier of the Polish Underground awarded with the title of “Righteous Among the Nations” in 1982 and honored with the Order of the White Eagle in 1995. More about Jan Karski on the portal “Polish Righteous”.
During the ceremony, the mayor of Milan Letizia Moratti read the letter from the First Lady of the Republic of Poland, Anna Komorowska. Trees and commemorative plaques devoted to five Righteous were unveiled. The virtual tree of Jan Karski can be seen here.
Jan Karski is the second Pole commemorated in the Garden of the Righteous – the first was Marek Edelman, one of the leaders of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and Knight of the Order of the White Eagle, political and social activist.
Every year the Gardens of the Righteous Worldwide commemorate not only people honored with the title „Righteous Among the Nations” by the Yad Vashem Institute, but also those who defend human rights, fight with totalitarianism and genocide. This year’s choice was made according to the title: „Unheeded Witnesses”.
Gariwo is the partner of the project “Polish Righteous – Recalling Forgotten History” financially supported by the program „Europe for Citizens”.
In September 2010 Gariwo carried out the project WeFor – Web European Forest Righteous: seven trees were devoted to Poles in the virtual Garden of the Righteous. Among the honored were: Władysław Bartoszewski, Jan Karski, father Jerzy Popiełuszko, Irena Sendler, Marek Edelman, Jacek Kuroń and Anna Walentynowicz.
